Beautiful vintage cuff bracelet by the Belgian silversmith and jewellery designer Mies De Wilde.
The open bracelet consists of a wide, smoothly finished band in sterling silver. At both ends is a raised, organic square element with recessed turquoise-blue enamel. The bright blue forms a strong contrast with the understated, polished silver.
Mies De Wilde (1932–2009) was an important Belgian silversmith and one of the innovators of Belgian jewellery art from the 1950s onwards. His work was shown, among other things, during Expo 58 and several of his pieces of jewellery are today in the collection of DIVA in Antwerp.
Although the base of the bracelet is very simple, the slightly irregular shapes and raised ends give the design a distinctly modernist character. It is precisely that combination of simplicity and an unexpected detail that makes the bracelet so recognisable.
The bracelet has no clasp and is slid around the wrist through the opening. The silver allows for very limited adjustment, but the bracelet is not intended to be opened and closed regularly or forcefully.
On the outside is the Belgian hallmark A925, together with the maker's mark and the stylized MDW signature of Mies De Wilde.
The bracelet is in good vintage condition and was worn. There are superficial scratches and normal signs of wear on the silver. On the underside there is one slightly deeper scratch. The turquoise-blue enamel is beautifully preserved.
