This large silver statement ring by Matti J. Hyvärinen for Sirokoru dates from 1970. Its square top displays the same crater-like relief as the matching cufflinks.
At its centre is a broad, circular depression with a finely textured surface. Around it, the silver appears to be pushed up irregularly, as if we are looking at a crater in a rugged lunar landscape. The combination of the clean square outline and the organic relief gives the ring its powerful modernist appeal.
The moon association fits well with Hyvärinen's work from this period. The 1969 moon landing inspired him to create several designs around the lunar surface, craters, and so-called lunar seas. An official model name for this ring could not be confirmed, but its imagery and dating clearly align with that special period in his work.
The square top rests on two short supports above the ring band, creating a small open space between the band and the ornament.
The ring is in good vintage condition and shows light surface scratches and signs of wear consistent with its age. The dark patina in the deeper parts accentuates the relief.
