This large modernist ring is the 'Dancer' model, designed by Matti J. Hyvärinen for the Finnish company Sirokoru. Dating from 1973, the ring is one of Hyvärinen's most distinctive sculptural designs.
Raised, undulating lines run across the top, connecting the various matte surfaces. An abstract representation of a dancing figure can be discerned, though Hyvärinen, as usual, leaves ample room for personal interpretation. The composition appears different from every angle.
With a top measuring 3.1 × 2.4 centimetres, this is a considerably striking ring. It also makes no concessions in height: the design rises approximately 1.4 centimetres above the finger. The interplay between matte surfaces and polished edges accentuates the depth of the relief.
The open ring band is adjustable and can be adapted to the desired ring size within reasonable limits.
The ring is in good vintage condition. It has clearly been worn and shows superficial scratches and normal signs of use. The original matte texture is still clearly visible, and the sculptural design is beautifully preserved.
