This antique pendant combines a large black onyx with exceptionally fine and colorful inlay work. A silver border with an elegantly engraved leaf motif runs all around. The silver back is also decorated with engravings, giving the pendant a beautiful finish on both sides.
In the center is a separate panel with small, engraved pieces of mother-of-pearl and iridescent abalone, complemented by fine curls and wires of silver. Together they form a detailed floral mosaic that lights up differently with every change of light.
The technique shows strong similarities with Shibayama inlay work. It is possible that the central panel was assembled in Japan and later placed in a European silver setting, as is also suspected for some very similar pieces of jewelry.
Based on its design, engravings, and comparable examples, the pendant is presumed to date from approximately 1910–1925. The black plaque is most likely onyx.
The pendant was purchased together with the matching silver chain. Due to their style and appearance, they clearly form a set, although it cannot be determined whether they were originally sold together. Both the pendant and the chain are unmarked, but both have been tested for silver.
