These silver cufflinks by Matti J. Hyvärinen for Sirokoru date from 1970. Each cufflink has a square shape with a wide, round depression in the middle. The rough and irregular relief around this depression inevitably brings to mind a crater in a lunar landscape.
The 1969 moon landing made a big impression on Hyvärinen. The craters, deep valleys, and rough structures of the moon's surface subsequently became the inspiration for several of his designs. Whether these cufflinks had an official model name is not documented, but in terms of shape and date, they clearly align with that period in his work.
The combination of the geometric square and the organic crater gives the cufflinks a powerful modernist appeal. The slightly matte depression contrasts beautifully with the smoother, higher-lying parts of the relief. A small moonscape on each wrist.
The fronts are attached to a fixed bar with a hinged T-closure. The cross-bar can be folded down to insert the cufflinks through the buttonholes and, when unfolded, holds them securely in place.
The cufflinks are in good vintage condition. They have been worn and show light superficial scratches and normal signs of use appropriate for their age.
